Banks Were Riding High on Trump. Now, Their Earnings Could Get Dinged.

During President Donald Trump's tenure from 2017 to 2021, U.S. banks experienced a period of significant growth, bolstered by deregulation efforts and a favorable economic environment. The administration's policies, including tax cuts and reduced regulatory constraints, contributed to increased profitability within the financial sector.

However, the landscape has shifted in recent years. In 2023, the banking industry faced substantial challenges, notably the failures of several large institutions, which prompted a reevaluation of risk management practices. Despite these setbacks, the industry demonstrated resilience. By 2024, banks had largely rebounded, with many reporting stronger-than-expected earnings. This recovery was attributed to robust dealmaking and trading activities, as well as a broadening revenue base.

As we progress through 2025, the outlook for U.S. banks presents a mixed picture. While some institutions continue to benefit from favorable economic conditions, others face headwinds that could impact their earnings. For instance, analysts have tempered their expectations for major banks like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Bank of America, citing hesitancy among corporate clients and fluctuating market conditions. Trade tensions and tariffs have also contributed to stock price volatility and dampened investor sentiment.

Additionally, the Federal Reserve's monetary policy plays a crucial role in shaping bank profitability. Recent interest rate cuts are expected to benefit banks by improving their net interest margins over time. For example, Charles Schwab Corp. is projected to see a significant increase in earnings per share and net interest income in 2025.

In summary, while U.S. banks enjoyed substantial gains during the Trump administration, current conditions present a more complex environment. Economic uncertainties, trade tensions, and evolving regulatory landscapes are factors that could potentially dampen earnings. Banks must navigate these challenges carefully to sustain profitability in the coming years.
