Putin says Russia backs Ukraine ceasefire but any deal must address ‘root causes’

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed conditional support for a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, emphasizing that any agreement must address the fundamental causes of the conflict to ensure lasting peace.

During a press conference alongside Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin acknowledged the potential benefits of a temporary truce but raised concerns that Ukraine might exploit the ceasefire to mobilize and rearm its forces. He stressed the importance of establishing mechanisms to monitor and prevent violations, stating that without addressing the underlying issues, a ceasefire would merely serve as a respite for Ukrainian forces.

Putin highlighted Russia's longstanding security concerns, particularly regarding NATO's eastward expansion and Ukraine's aspirations to join the alliance. He underscored that any meaningful peace settlement must include Ukraine's commitment to neutrality and the recognition of territories currently under Russian control.

The Russian leader also expressed gratitude towards U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in facilitating the ceasefire proposal and indicated openness to further discussions, including a potential phone call with Trump. However, Putin firmly rejected the involvement of NATO peacekeepers in the region, viewing it as a potential escalation rather than a step towards resolution.

On the ground, hostilities continue, with Russian forces reportedly reclaiming parts of the Kursk region from Ukrainian control and downing several Ukrainian drones. Despite these developments, international aid to Ukraine persists, with countries like Canada, Finland, and Sweden providing substantial support.

Analysts caution that while Putin's conditional support for the ceasefire appears constructive, it may also serve as a strategic maneuver to solidify gains and pressure Ukraine into concessions.
