Vance expects a ‘high-level’ TikTok deal by the April 5 deadline

Vice President JD Vance has expressed optimism that a significant agreement concerning TikTok's operations in the United States will be finalized by the impending April 5 deadline. In a recent interview, Vance stated, "There will almost certainly be a high-level agreement that I think satisfies our national security concerns, allows there to be a distinct American TikTok enterprise."

The urgency surrounding TikTok's future stems from a law enacted on January 19, which mandates that ByteDance, TikTok's China-based parent company, divest its U.S. operations or face a ban due to national security concerns. Upon taking office, President Donald Trump issued an executive order extending the enforcement of this law by 75 days, setting the current deadline at April 5.

Vice President Vance, alongside National Security Adviser Michael Waltz, has been tasked with overseeing the negotiations for TikTok's sale. President Trump recently mentioned that discussions are ongoing with four potential buyers, though specific details about these parties have not been disclosed.

Among the interested parties, Oracle, led by Larry Ellison, has emerged as a leading contender to partner in managing TikTok. ByteDance reportedly favors Oracle—TikTok's current cloud storage provider—as a partner and wishes to retain a stake in TikTok, despite legislative requirements for total divestiture. Other potential buyers include a consortium led by Frank McCourt and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, as well as a group spearheaded by tech entrepreneur Jesse Tinsley with support from YouTube personality MrBeast.

Vance acknowledged that while the primary framework of the deal is expected to be in place by April 5, finalizing all contractual details might extend beyond this date. He noted the complexity of the agreements, stating, "The deal itself will be very clear, but actually creating those thousands and thousands of pages of legal documents, that's the one thing that I worry could slip."

President Trump has indicated a willingness to extend the deadline if necessary, expressing optimism about the ongoing negotiations and the potential for collaboration with Chinese stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of addressing national security concerns while maintaining the app's availability to U.S. users.

As the April 5 deadline approaches, the administration remains focused on securing an agreement that ensures data privacy and addresses national security issues, aiming to establish a distinct American TikTok entity.
