Stock Market News: Dow Slides After Latest Data on Inflation, Consumer Sentiment

March 28, 2025 – The stock market took a downturn on Thursday as fresh economic data fueled concerns about persistent inflation and weakening consumer sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 1.3%, shedding over 450 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also closed in the red, declining 1.5% and 1.7%, respectively.

Inflation Data Raises Concerns

The latest report from the Bureau of Economic Analysis revealed that the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, rose 0.4% in February, outpacing analyst expectations. On an annual basis, the core PCE index, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, registered a 3.3% increase, reinforcing concerns that inflation remains stubbornly above the Fed’s 2% target.

The data has led to renewed speculation that the Federal Reserve may delay interest rate cuts, a factor that has weighed on investor sentiment. Despite previous market optimism about a possible rate reduction by mid-2025, policymakers have signaled a more cautious approach.

Consumer Sentiment Slumps

Adding to market jitters, the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index showed a decline to 76.5 in March, down from 79.6 in February. The drop reflects growing concerns about higher prices, particularly for essentials such as housing, healthcare, and food.

“Consumers are feeling the pinch of elevated costs, and their confidence in future economic conditions has taken a hit,” said Laura Mitchell, chief economist at Horizon Financial. “That, in turn, could impact spending behavior in the months ahead.”

Sector Performance and Market Reaction

The selloff hit technology and consumer discretionary stocks the hardest, with major players like Apple (AAPL), Tesla (TSLA), and Amazon (AMZN) all posting losses exceeding 2%. Financial stocks also struggled amid concerns over a prolonged period of high interest rates.

Conversely, energy stocks saw modest gains, buoyed by a rise in crude oil prices. WTI crude futures climbed 1.8%, crossing the $85 per barrel threshold as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continued to impact supply outlooks.

Looking Ahead

Investors will be closely watching upcoming speeches from Federal Reserve officials for any signals on monetary policy adjustments. Additionally, next week’s jobs report and earnings results from key retailers could provide further insight into the strength of the economy and consumer resilience.

For now, Wall Street remains on edge as uncertainty surrounding inflation and interest rates continues to drive market volatility.
