US Economy Grew 2.4% Last Quarter as Corporate Profits Jumped
The U.S. economy demonstrated resilience in the fourth quarter of 2024, with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanding at an annual rate of 2.4%, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). This marks a slight deceleration from the 3.1% growth observed in the third quarter.
Consumer Spending Fuels Growth
A significant driver of this growth was a surge in consumer spending, which remained robust throughout the quarter. Increased expenditures in services and non-durable goods played a pivotal role in sustaining economic momentum.
Corporate Profits Experience Notable Rebound
In tandem with GDP growth, U.S. corporate profits experienced a substantial rebound. Profits rose by $204.7 billion in the fourth quarter, following a $15.0 billion decline in the previous quarter. This marks the highest growth rate since the second quarter of 2024.
Manufacturing Sector Shows Strength
The manufacturing sector contributed to this positive trend, with seasonally adjusted after-tax profits totaling $219.1 billion in the fourth quarter. This represents an increase of $39.6 billion from the third quarter and $17.0 billion from the same period in the previous year.
Financial Institutions Report Record Earnings
Major financial institutions also reported impressive earnings. JPMorgan Chase achieved a 50% profit surge to $14 billion in the fourth quarter, culminating in a record-breaking annual profit of $58.5 billion. Similarly, Goldman Sachs reported quarterly profits of $4.1 billion, its highest in over three years.
Outlook and Considerations
Despite these positive indicators, the economic outlook remains nuanced. The Federal Reserve has maintained interest rates amid uncertainties, and early estimates suggest a potential slowdown in GDP growth for the first quarter of 2025. Additionally, inflationary pressures have been noted, with the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index rising to 2.4%, slightly above the Federal Reserve's target.
In summary, the fourth quarter of 2024 showcased the U.S. economy's capacity for growth, underpinned by strong consumer spending and a notable rebound in corporate profits. However, ongoing trade policies and inflationary trends warrant careful monitoring as the economy progresses into 2025.
