BREAKING: Russian President Vladimir Putin Announces Easter Ceasefire in Ukraine Beginning Saturday Night
In a move framed as a humanitarian gesture, Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a 30-hour ceasefire in Ukraine to coincide with Orthodox Easter celebrations. The truce is set to commence at 6:00 p.m. Moscow time on Saturday, April 19, and will extend until midnight on Monday, April 21. The announcement was made via a Kremlin statement on Telegram, emphasizing the pause in military operations for religious observance.
"Guided by humanitarian considerations, today from 18:00 to midnight from Sunday to Monday, the Russian side declares an Easter truce," the statement read. However, it also noted that Russian forces are instructed to remain vigilant and prepared to respond to any provocations or breaches of the truce by Ukrainian forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed skepticism regarding the ceasefire, labeling it as manipulative. He cited ongoing Russian air raids and drone attacks as evidence undermining the sincerity of the truce.
The ceasefire announcement comes amid intensified military activity. Russian forces have claimed the recapture of Oleshnya in the Kursk region and reported ongoing battles in Gornal. Meanwhile, Ukraine has reported intercepting or jamming numerous Russian drones, with several attacks causing damage in the Odesa and Sumy regions, though no casualties have been reported.
Internationally, the United States has expressed growing urgency for progress in peace talks. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have warned that American engagement may wane without tangible results.
This ceasefire marks a rare pause in the ongoing conflict, though its effectiveness and adherence by both parties remain to be seen. Further updates are anticipated as the situation develops.
